GAME DESIGN PROGRAM

CURRICULUM BREAKDOWN

Interactive lessons build a foundation of coding, animation skills, storyboarding, and visual art techniques. Take that foundation to create your own game in Unreal Engine, the industry-standard game design software. Alone or with a team, develop a playable game in the first semester. Learn coding and front-end interfaces to polish your game. Small class sizes provide focused, individualized training and plenty of one-on-one time with active, professional video game creators as your instructors.

TERM 1: CORE KNOWLEDGE

COURSES

  • GAME DESIGN

    Think like a game designer to evaluate the question at the heart of video game creation: “What makes a game fun?” Learn about developing gameplay, rules, scoring systems, level of difficulty, and game balance along with how to create the storyline, characters and backstories, and dialogue in a game.

  • GAME PRODUCTION

    Take your video game from a dream to reality. You will see everything in the production pipeline of games and how you can make your video game into a professional product.

  • GAME MECHANICS

    By determining the rules, plot, objectives, challenges and physics through game mechanics, your player will be guided through how to interact with the game. This hands-on part of the course will teach you the principles that make games exciting.

  • ANIMATION + MODELLING

    3D animation and 3D modelling are what make your game come alive. Through learning the fundamentals of modelling and animation, your game will become dynamic, filled with realistic environments, lighting, and fluid graphics. 

  • GAME HISTORY

    Glean insight into the future of gaming through its explosive history. Identify technological shifts and the subsequent social and cultural impacts to anticipate the future trajectory of the industry. Try your hand at iconic games within key genres that define and delineate the market today.

TERM 2: HANDS-ON PRODUCTION

COURSES

  • UNREAL ENGINE

    This game engine will be the backbone of your program and career. Used across a variety of fields in the entertainment industry and beyond, this ubiquitous software is how you will craft your game.

  • VIDEO GAME HISTORY

    Glean insight into the future of gaming through its explosive history. Identify technological shifts and the subsequent social and cultural impacts to anticipate the future trajectory of the industry. Try your hand at iconic games within key genres that define and delineate the market today.

  • PROGRAMMING

    Due to the virtual nature of games, programming is fundamental. By honing your critical mindset, you will begin to understand that programming acts like a language and can infinitely expand your game design.

  • QUALITY ASSURANCE

    Your eye for detail and patience is needed as a game designer and in the QA role. You will learn how to indeindity bugs, glitches, and other issues that may appear in your game.

  • GAME ART

    Visuals are what make up a game, therefore the game art and the ability to conceptualize characters, environments, backgrounds, and more is necessary. Through a survey of the fundamentals of artint e video games industry, you will learn how to use art in games.

  • LEVEL DESIGN

    Emphasizing a problem-solving mindset, this course introduces fundamental design theories such as golden paths, navigation, and world-building. Incorporate game mechanics, creating obstacles, setting limitations, and more to create a positive and engaging experience.

TERM 3: SKILL SPECIALIZATION

  • UX/UI DEVELOPMENT

    User Experience (UX) focuses on cultivating an intuitive understanding of the gameplay while User Interface (UI) deals with the direct interface that mediates how a player facilities their in-game actions. Both are integral to creating a seamlessly playable game.

  • BUSINESS FOR GAMES

    In order to become a game designer, you will need to learn how to navigate the game industry’s job market. lLearn networking skills, create a resume, and polish your portfolio.
